This is an Expression of Interest (EOI) for artists to consider a permanent art installation for the Threshold Art Commission as part of the Frederick Street and Mechanics Lane redevelopment in Castlemaine. The proposed artwork will be located in a kerbside parklet on the corner of Templeton and Frederick Street. The budget is estimated between $60,000 and $80,000. Artists are encouraged to respond to the theme of 'threshold' considering spatial, temporal, and social dimensions. The artwork should be robust, low-maintenance, and align with Dja Dja Wurrung cultural narratives. The EOI process involves stages: Expression of Interest, Artist Concept Selection, and final Artist Selection. Key dates include EOI opening on May 8, 2026, and closing on May 21, 2026. Artists are required to apply online and submit an artist CV and images of previous work. Evaluation criteria include responses to site and brief, creative practices, local economy, and diversity and inclusion.
The completion of the public art installation is expected by April 9, 2027.
Submissions will be reviewed by a curatorial panel using the following evaluation criteria: responses to site and brief (30%), responses to creative practices (30%), responses to local economy (30%), and responses to diversity and inclusion (10%).
All artists with suitable experience and/or skills may apply. We strongly encourage artists from central Victoria to apply. We strongly encourage applications from female-identifying, First Peoples, people living with a disability, culturally or linguistically diverse people, and LGBTQIA people.
No artwork proposal is required at this stage. This is a preliminary request for interest.
Supplier query cutoff is Wednesday, 20 May 2026, 05:00 am.
The proposed budget is an estimate, pending further approvals, ranging from $60,000 to $80,000.
